I love octupuses (octopi?). I’ve always sort of wanted a tattoo of one. Maybe someday.
So, so good.
Searching for the best Banh Mi in Perth
Is this 2011’s best post from a West Australian food blog? There’d have to be some serious competition to wrestle the mantle from @blueapocalypse’s hand. Authoritative, insightful, focused and born out of eating and exploring, it’s a shining example of not just great blogging, but great food writing full stop.
In honour of Harry Armstrong Locksmiths in Perth unlocking a vintage American Tourister suitcase I bought at an op-shop, just wanted to share a classic ad.

Luxardo Manhattan
Inspired by an excellent bourbon Manhattan enjoyed in Wellington (read all about it in a coming article), I decided to try and replicate something at home. No bourbon around the house, so used some 12YO Macallan instead. Not sure why, but at any rate, it didn’t have the same sweetness or thickness of the bourbon, so might try a blended whisky like the Chivas 18YO next time. Or buy some bourbon. This is basically a perfect Manhattan with Luxardo maraschino in place of the dry. Future variants to include playing around with bitters and garnishes (something I’m, admittedly, often too lazy to do, other than citrus twists that is).
60ml whisky
15ml sweet vermouth (Punt e Mes)
15ml Luxardo maraschino liqueur
Combine booze with ice in a glass and gently stir. Strain into a cocktail glass.
